MISA Regional Launches Media Lawyers Network to Strengthen Press Freedom

6 May, 2026
The initiative is part of efforts to strengthen legal protection for journalists, media houses and civil society organisations facing growing legal and digital threats.

Media Institute of Southern Africa (MISA) officially launched the Regional Media Lawyers Network, a platform bringing together media and human rights lawyers from across Southern Africa to defend media freedom and freedom of expression. The initiative was launched on May 5, 2026, in Lusaka as part of efforts to strengthen legal protection for journalists, media houses and civil society organisations facing growing legal and digital threats.

The network will provide legal support and rapid response services in cases involving defamation, cybercrime charges, unlawful surveillance, data protection disputes and Strategic Lawsuits Against Public Participation (SLAPPs).

Speaking during the launch, MISA Zambia Chairperson, Lorraine Mwanza Chisanga described the establishment of the network as a significant milestone in strengthening the legal defence of journalists and independent media in the region. The Chairperson noted that the changing media landscape, driven by digital technologies and emerging forms of regulation, has increased the need for coordinated regional legal support mechanisms.

The Chairperson further highlighted the importance of collective action among legal professionals in safeguarding media rights and freedom of expression.

Mrs. Chisanga further encouraged lawyers and stakeholders within the network to actively engage in knowledge-sharing, strategic litigation and advocacy aimed at improving media laws and protecting democratic participation across Southern Africa.
