Lusaka, Tuesday, August 18, 2026…………………………… MISA Zambia extends its congratulations to the President Elect, Mr. Hakainde Hichilema, for being elected President of Zambia for the second time after emerging victorious in the just ended 2026 general elections.
MISA Zambia further congratulates all individuals who have been elected to various positions, including Members of Parliament, Mayors, Council Chairpersons and Councilors in the just ended general elections. We also wish to congratulate and thank all the other candidates who participated in the elections but were not victorious, your participation has made democracy stronger in Zambia.
We call on all elected leaders to uphold the Constitution, protect media and freedom of expression and ensure that information is made available to ensure transparency and accountability.
We also wish to commend the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) for the professional manner in which it conducted the elections. The largely peaceful environment before, during, and after polling day is a testament to the Commission’s commitment and to the maturity of the Zambian people.
Lastly, we extol the media for their proactive role during this period to ensure that the general public stayed informed with information on the elections
We remain open to advancing media and freedom of expression principles and ensure that the environment under which journalists operate from remains sound.
As the election period winds down, we remain committed to sharing our reports of our monitoring to build on the strength of our electoral systems based on some of the areas we noted need to be addressed.
