The commemoration of World Press Freedom Day in Lusaka brought renewed calls for the media to promote peace, unity and democratic values as Zambia approaches the August 13, 2026 General Elections. Officiating at the event at Govt. Complex on May 3rd, Minister of Information and Media Hon. Cornelius Mweetwa urged journalists to embrace patriotic and responsible reporting that strengthens national cohesion and safeguards the country’s democratic integrity.
The Minister described the media as a critical pillar in maintaining national stability and fostering informed public discourse. He stressed that Zambia’s peace remains a priceless national asset that should be protected through ethical journalism and balanced reporting, especially during the electoral period when tensions and misinformation can easily threaten national unity.
Media Institute of Southern Africa (MISA) Zambia Chairperson, Mrs. Lorraine Mwanza Chisanga emphasized the importance of press freedom in advancing human rights, development and democratic governance. Mrs. Chisanga called on media practitioners to uphold professionalism, accuracy and fairness in their coverage, noting that the credibility of the media will play a key role in promoting public confidence ahead of the elections.
The Chairperson further urged journalists and media institutions to remain steadfast in defending media freedom while exercising responsibility in the dissemination of information. The commemorations highlighted the growing need for collaboration among government, the media and other stakeholders in creating a peaceful and inclusive democratic environment.
