MISA commemorates International Women’s Day

8 Mar, 2026
Journalists must continue to promote ethical reporting that challenge stereotypes and highlight issues affecting women while ensuring that women themselves are given the opportunity to tell their own stories.

PRESS STATEMENT

For Immediate Release

LUSAKA – MISA Zambia joins the rest of the world in celebrating women and girls under the theme, “Rights, Action and Justice for all Women and Girls.”

This day serves as an important reminder that gender equality, human dignity and inclusive participation are fundamental pillars of democratic societies.

MISA Zambia recognises that the realisation of women’s rights is closely linked to the protection of freedom of expression and access to information. When women and girls are empowered to speak freely, share their experiences and participate in public discourse without fear or discrimination, societies benefit from diverse perspectives that contribute to more responsive governance and sustainable development.

Despite notable progress, many women and girls continue to face barriers that limit their ability to express themselves openly. Cultural norms, online harassment, gender-based violence and structural inequalities often silence women’s voices in communities, newsrooms and digital spaces.

MISA Zambia, therefore, calls for renewed commitment from government institutions, the media, civil society and the general public to create safe and inclusive platforms where women can speak and be heard.

The media plays a critical role in advancing the rights of women and girls by providing balanced representation, amplifying women’s voices and holding institutions accountable for gender injustices. Journalists and media organisations must continue to promote ethical reporting that challenges stereotypes and highlight issues affecting women while ensuring that women themselves are given the opportunity to tell their own stories.

As Zambia moves forward in strengthening democratic participation and inclusive development, MISA Zambia calls on all sectors of society to actively support an environment where women and girls can freely express their views, participate in decision-making processes and contribute meaningfully to national development.
