Press Statement

‎For Immediate Release

‎‎LUSAKA – MISA Zambia joins the rest of the country in commemorating Police Day under the theme “Peaceful Elections: Our Shared Responsibility.”

For many years, MISA Zambia and the Zambia Police Service have maintained a constructive working relationship and collaborated on a number of issues, including the promotion of media freedom and freedom of expression. We value this partnership and the continued engagement aimed at strengthening democratic governance in Zambia.

On this important day, MISA Zambia honours the brave men and women in uniform for their unwavering dedication, sacrifice, and courage in protecting communities, maintaining law and order, and upholding justice often under very challenging circumstances. We recognize the commitment of police officers who put their lives at risk daily in service to the nation.

As the country approaches the electoral period, we acknowledge the critical role the Zambia Police Service plays in safeguarding peace and stability. This year’s theme is a timely reminder that peaceful elections are not the responsibility of the Police alone, but a collective duty shared by citizens, political actors, civil society, and the media.

As the media prepares to cover the upcoming elections, MISA Zambia reminds the Zambia Police of their duty to ensure the safety and protection of journalists and media workers. A free and independent press is essential for transparent, credible, and accountable elections.

Media personnel must therefore be allowed to operate freely, without intimidation, harassment, or arbitrary arrest.

MISA Zambia remains committed to working collaboratively with the Zambia Police Service and other stakeholders to ensure that the forthcoming elections are free, fair, and peaceful.
