Public Discussion on enhancing issue-based journalism to promote democracy

28 Jun, 2024
The role of the media cannot be overstated because the media serves as a watchdog for democracy

MISA Zambia and the Friedrich Ebert Stiftung (FES) Zambia Office today held a public discussion on “Enhancing Issue-based Journalism to Promote Democracy” at Protea Hotel in Lusaka.

MISA Zambia Chairperson Lorraine Mwanza Chisanga gave the opening speech stating that it is important that the Media remain vigilant even as the country approaches the general elections in 2026. The role of the media in this vigilance cannot be overstated because the media serves as a watchdog for democracy.

FES Resident Representative, Fritz Kopsieker in his remarks commended journalists, editors and media owners who have taken it upon themselves to resist direct and indirect pressure to provide inferior media products as he emphasized on objectivity by the media.

A keynote speech on quality reporting to promote democracy was delivered by veteran journalist, Mr. Fanwell Chembo, who addressed key issues surrounding the profession and pointed the audience towards serving with integrity.

A panel discussion featuring editors from News Diggers, Radio Phoenix, Zambia Daily Mail, and representatives from SACCORD explored journalism’s role in enhancing democracy in Zambia.

The event concluded with a Q&A session, allowing participants to engage directly with the speakers and panelists on the critical role of journalism in fostering democratic values in Zambia.
