EQUAL RIGHTS FOR ALL
LUSAKA – As Zambia celebrates the International Women’s Day (IWD), MISA Zambia is calling for elimination of discrimination against women, especially when it comes to leadership.
Therefore, this year’s IWD theme ‘Women in leadership: Achieving an equal future in a COVID-19 world,’ is very timely as Zambia heads to the polls.
The International Women’s Day is a day that has been set aside by the United Nations to celebrate the role that women play in society and their efforts in addressing inequalities in society.
This year’s theme is timely as it envisions an equal future in a Covid – 19 world. The Covid – 19 pandemic has devastated economies globally and the world has had to rethink strategies and measures to put in place in order to carry on operations in all sectors.
Women do have a role to play in this COVID-19 world as mothers in homes, care givers and front-liners. Further, women in leadership contribute positively to the growth and development of institutions that they represent.
In most African countries, women’s bid to promote gender equality is compromised due to gender inequality which is arising from a culture that places the man as a leader and women as followers in their communities.
A look at the Zambian media landscape will show that the industry is a male dominated field in terms of personnel in leadership positions. A feature that we must all put efforts in amending to include equal participation from both men and women.
It is for this reason that we must all strive for equal rights for all in line with the United Nations Convention on the elimination of all forms of discrimination against women
