Radio and Climate Change

LUSAKA, Thursday, February 13, 2025 – On the occasion of the 2025 World Radio Day (WRD), MISA Zambia reaffirms its unwavering commitment to media freedom and underscores the pivotal role of radio in addressing one of the most pressing challenges of our time. This year’s theme is “Radio and Climate Change”.

The relevance of radio in today’s world serves as a reminder of the enduring power that Radio has, providing a platform for citizens to speak and also be heard thereby contributing to meaningful dialogue. Its unique ability to transcend geographical barriers to reach its listeners has made radio one of the preferred modes of communication today. Radio has always been a vital bridge between communities, offering a trusted platform for information, dialogue, and social change, as we confront the escalating impacts of climate change, radio stations across Zambia must serve as beacons of reliable and factual reporting.

World Radio Day 2025 is a reminder of the need for meaningful collaborations between government, civil society, media, and all other concerned stakeholders in Zambia to develop solutions to the climate crisis that threatens food security, especially for small-scale farmers. Given the current climate crisis that the country is facing, radio is key to information dissemination providing factual information from reliable sources for listeners to make informed decisions.

This year’s theme highlights the transformative potential of radio to disseminate accurate information about climate change, encourage sustainable practices, and foster community engagement. On this World Radio Day, let us celebrate the power of radio to inform, inspire, and unite communities.
