MISA marks ICDB: Safeguarding children in media and beyond

1 Mar, 2026
As we mark this day, MISA Zambia calls on media houses, regulators, and policymakers to prioritise child-friendly content that educates, entertains, and empowers our children

PRESS STATEMENT

For Immediate Release

Lusaka, Sunday – MISA Zambia joins the country and the rest of the world in commemorating the International Children’s Day of Broadcasting (ICDB), which falls under the theme “Safeguarding Children in Media and Beyond.”

Children are not just the future, they are active contributors to society today. This is why, as we mark this day, MISA Zambia calls on media houses, regulators, and policymakers to prioritise child-friendly content that educates, entertains, and empowers our children.

Broadcasting platforms hold immense power to educate, inspire, and empower children, yet it must prioritise their safety amid rising digital risks through media literacy to combat misinformation and protection from harmful content.

We commend initiatives like child-hosted programs, but urge greater action, media houses must adopt age-appropriate guidelines, while regulators enforce laws against exploitation.

Beyond media, this theme demands everyone take deliberate steps to ensure content is safe, educational and healthy. Additionally, initiatives such as these must be ongoing and not only realised during the commemoration of ICDB.

MISA Zambia appeals to the Zambia Information and Communications Technology Authority (ZICTA), the Ministry of Information, broadcasters and other stakeholders to:

  • Implement child protection protocols in media production.
  • Promote media literacy programs against misinformation.
  • Support parental tools for safe online oversight.
  • Advance inclusivity in children’s broadcasting content.

Let us unite to safeguard children in media and beyond, building a future where their voices thrive securely.
